No. 5 Badgers pounce on Lions, 6-0

Eden, Wheeler and Shirley each score twice in home opener

MADISON, Wis. – A trio of Badgers scored a pair of goals to lead the fifth-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team to a 6-0 win on Thursday night at LaBahn Arena.

Lacey Eden, Maddi Wheeler and Sophie Shirley each potted two goals for the Badgers (2-1-0) in their home-opening triumph over the Lions (0-3-0).

Eden got things going in the first with her third goal of the season to give UW a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Wheeler scored her first of the year midway through the second after a power play expired before Shirley scored two minutes later, lifting UW to a 3-0 lead after two periods.

Wheeler, Shirley and Eden each scored their second goals of the game in a 2:03 span in the third period to put the game out of reach.

Three Notes of the Game

- Cami Kronish earned her first career shutout, stopping all three shots on net by the Lions.
- Natalie Buchbinder, Jesse Compher, and Nicole LaMantia all enjoyed multi-assist games for the Badgers.

UW Head Coach Mark Johnson
On the team's play:

"I like the way we were moving. We moved the puck well and I liked how the defensemen joined in the offensive zone. It's obviously really early in the season, but I'll try to look for improvements in different parts of the game and prepare to know what we saw last weekend at Penn State."

On Sophie Shirley's play:
"Tonight in the second period, we talked about getting some dirty goals, and she ends up getting one. Some nights you're going to score a bunch of dirty goals, and other nights you might score some highlight-type goals."

Junior Maddi Wheeler
On the shot differential:

"I think it goes to show how well we were forechecking. We held them in their zone a lot and they didn't get out to get any opportunities to get shots, so that was a big key to it. That also helped us get a lot of shots too."

On her line:
"I think we cycle the puck really well. We move it to each other and we're forechecking very well. When we get the puck below the goal line, we are moving it to each other and crashing the net. Both my goals were from in front of the net and Lacey had some good shots off the rush."

Sophomore Lacey Eden
On her first game at LaBahn with fans:

" It's such a fun atmosphere. The fans make such a difference. It's awesome to see so many people there cheering. It's electric and brings a new energy to the team."

On not allowing a shot on goal over the last two periods:
"It means we're rolling. All of our lines are going after each other, making smart plays and keeping the puck deep. It means we're playing good hockey."
