CONCEPCION, Chile – A pair of past women's rowing Badgers are among the 20 athletes who are looking to help Team USA qualify boats for the 2023 Pan American Games rowing competition set for Oct. 21-25 in Chile.
Grace Joyce and Isa Darvin are both racing in two events and both of Joyce's boats advanced out of her heats, while Darvin advanced in one race and will compete in a repechage heat to advance in her second event during the first two days of racing on Saturday and Sunday.
Joyce won her heat to claim one of her heat's top three semifinal-advancing spots in Saturday's women's single sculls. Sixteen total races were entered in the event. Joyce clocked an 8:03.58 to win her heat over second place Cloe Callorda of Uruguay by over 21 seconds.
Joyce also took second with the women's quadruple sculls in their heat to advance to Monday's final.
The Northfield, Illinois, native, has competed three times as a member of the U.S. national team, including most recently in the women's quadruple sculls at the 2022 World Rowing Championships in Czech Republic.
Darvin, a 2020 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association All-American nominee at Wisconsin, began her regatta in the women's pair on Saturday. The Madison, Wisconsin, native, who is making her international debut for Team USA, helped her boat place second in her heat to advance directly to Monday's final. Ten boats are entered in the event.
In the women's straight four on Sunday, Darvin's crew placed second, less than a second behind heat winner Mexico. The crew will next race in the repechage for a second chance to reach the final.
