MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's soccer team commences its 2023 Big Ten campaign against Nebraska on Friday, Sept. 15. The Badgers finished third in the Big Ten standings last year with a conference record of 6-3-1.
Here are five things to know:
1. KNOW THE OPPONENT: The Badgers are 6-5-3 all-time against Nebraska and are 2-2-2 in Lincoln. The sides last faced each other on Oct. 23, 2022, which resulted in a 4-1 Wisconsin win.
The Cornhuskers hold a record of 6-1-1, dropping out of the national rankings this past week. The team is coming off a 3-2 loss to No. 25 Saint Louis on Sunday, Sept. 10.
2. PLAYERS TO WATCH: Aryssa Mahrt has a knack for goals and is off to a hot start to the 2023 season. The senior has two goals and three assists in all eight contests. Mahrt is a multipurpose player who can play both up top and in the midfield, showing her versatility for the Badgers.
For the Cornhuskers, Eleanor Dale has an impressive 12 goals and two assists on the season. She claimed Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and has consistently scored or assisted in all the team's matches.
3. RECAPPING THE WEEK: Wisconsin is on a four-game win streak, beating in-state rival Marquette 1-0 on Sunday, Sept. 10. The Golden Eagles played most of the match down a player due to a red card in the first half. Emma Jaskaniec and Izzy Verdugo linked up in the 79th minute to seal the win for the Badgers.
