Five Things to Know: No. 3 Badgers host Tommies

UW resumes conference play with a home series with St. Thomas

MADISON, Wis. – The No. 3 Wisconsin women’s hockey team steps back into conference play this weekend with a series with St. Thomas. Puck drop on Saturday is set for 3 p.m. CT while Sunday's contest begins at 2 p.m. 

Both games are sold out, but fans can watch the action on Big Ten Plus. Saturday's game can be heard on 100.9 FM while Sunday's contest will air live on 1070 The Game. 

Fans should note that parking this season will be $5 per game in Lots 29, 46 and 91. ADA parking is also available for $5 in Lots 44 and 87 and is subject to availability. Fans should note there is a UW men's basketball game on Saturday at 11 a.m. with men's hockey to follow women's hockey at 7 p.m.

Britta Curl celebrates a goal against Merrimack

1. LAST TIME OUT

Wisconsin is coming off of a sweep of Merrimack, defeating the Warriors 6-1 on Friday and 6-1 again on Saturday. Britta Curl and Kirsten Simms each posted five-point weekends while Cassie Hall chipped in four points. 

Jane Gervais earned her eighth win of the year on Friday, stopping 17 shots she faced while Ava McNaughton made 16 saves to earn her eighth victory of the season on Saturday. 

With the sweep, Wisconsin ended its non-conference slate with a 6-0-0 record, outscoring opponents 51-8. 

2. CHUCK-A-PUCK DAY

The Badgers will host their second-ever Chuck-A-Puck Game on Saturday against the Tommies. 

Fans who make a donation of nonperishable canned foods during the Badgers' 3 p.m. game against St. Thomas will receive puck(s) to throw on the ice after the game for the chance to win one of several Badger-themed prizes! 

Fans can bring two nonperishable food items to receive one puck or five or more nonperishable food items to receive two pucks. The maximum number of pucks that each fan is able to receive is two.

All non-perishable food items collected at the game will be donated to The Open Seat Food Pantry, serving students in need on UW-Madison's campus.

Fans should abide by the Badgers' carry-in policy when bringing in non-perishable food items. 

3. CURL AND HALL EARN WCHA HONORS

Linemates Britta Curl and Cassie Hall both earned WCHA honors on Monday as Curl was named the WCHA Forward of the Week for the first time this season while Hall was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week for the second time. 

A native of Bismarck, North Dakota, Curl posted a goal in each game and added three assists on the weekend. Her +5 plus/minus rating was also tied for the team lead.

Hall, a South Lyon, Michigan, native,  had a goal and an assist in both games during the sweep. 

Curl was tied for the league lead in scoring with five points over the weekend while Hall's four points led all WCHA rookies.

4. A LOOK AROUND THE LEAGUE

Wisconsin enters the back half of its WCHA slate with 31 points, good for third place in the league standings. Ohio State is six points ahead of UW with 37 points and Minnesota is second with 33 points. St. Cloud State sits in fourth with 26 points and UMD is in fifth with 23. Minnesota State (9), Bemidji State (6) and St. Thomas (3) round out the league standings. 

Wisconsin will host the other top-four teams in the conference in February as UW opens the month by welcoming the Huskies to Madison on Feb. 3-4. The Badgers will host Minnesota on Feb. 16-17 before wrapping up regular-season action with Ohio State on Feb. 23-24.

5. AGAINST THE TOMMIES

Wisconsin leads the all-time series against St. Thomas 9-0-0, including a 2-0-0 record in Madison. 

Kirsten Simms has posted 10 points in six games against St. Thomas, including five points during the Badgers’ sweep of the Tommies earlier this season. 

Lacey Eden has six points in five total games against St. Thomas while Caroline Harvey has six points in four total games against UST.
