SEATTLE -- After 110 minutes of play on Sunday, the Wisconsin women’s soccer team (0-3-1) tied Washington (3-1-1) in the final game of the Husky Invitational.
The Badgers finished the tournament 0-1-1 after falling 2-0 to No. 4 Portland on Friday.
“I am disappointed that we didn’t get a result this weekend,” Wisconsin head coach Paula Wilkins said. “I am disappointed that three of the goals we gave up this weekend were on set pieces. That is something we have to focus on.”
Wisconsin had its strongest start of the season on Sunday, outshooting the Huskies 6-4 and recording a 1-0 advantage in the first half.
Freshman Kodee Williams (Toronto, Ontario) capitalized on a deflection to slate her first career-goal and the Badgers’ first goal of the season in the 33rd minute to give UW the early lead.
“I am happy that Kodee got her first goal,” Wilkins said. “I think that it’s part of a learning curve for us and we need to be able to hold onto a lead when we get ahead. I think that’s another baby step for us as a program.”
The Huskies outshot the Badgers 15-13, however, Wisconsin only surrendered one goal in 110 minutes of play.
Washington answered Wisconsin’s 1-0 advantage with 10:47 left in regulation when Kendyl Pele found the back of the net off of a direct kick taken by Kellye Joswick.
“I think it’s difficult to come out here and play the likes of Portland and Washington,” Wilkins said. “To get a tie, I think that moves this young team in the right direction.
“I think that we learned some important lessons from this, but we need to continue to develop.”
After the end of regulation, the teams competed in two 10-minute scoreless overtime periods to record the 1-1 tie.
Senior goalkeeper Michele Dalton (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) stopped four of Washington’s shot attempts for Wisconsin, while Jorde Lafontaine-Kussmann tallied two saves for the Huskies.
Portland defeated Wisconsin on Friday and Syracuse, 3-1, on Sunday to capture the Husky Invitational title.
The Badgers will host two games at the McClimon Complex next weekend. Wisconsin battles South Dakota State for the first time in program history on Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. UW then wraps up the weekend on Sept. 12 against in-state foe Milwaukee at 1 p.m. Wisconsin is 17-4-5 all-time with the Panthers.
