MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women’s rowing team rowed to impressive finishes Saturday at the Milwaukee River Challenge, including first place in both the open eight and open four.
“We had a really good day,” UW head coach Bebe Bryans said. “The conditions were a lot better than they looked like they would be. We ended up with really good results. Having the freshman and sophomores representing the open weights, it was a really strong and solid performance and a really great way to start the year.”
In the open eight the Badgers swept the podium, as the Wisconsin B, Wisconsin A and Wisconsin E boats took first, second and third, respectively.
The Wisconsin B boat registered a time of 16:36.22, while the Wisconsin A boat came in at 16:50.99 and the Wisconsin E boat finished in 17:43.82.
The Wisconsin E boat narrowly took the bronze, crossing the finish line just over two seconds faster than the Chicago Rowing Foundation.
Placing sixth was the Wisconsin D boat (17:56.53) and ninth the Wisconsin C boat (18:51.14).
In the open four race, the Badgers stuck to their winning ways, capturing six of the top 10 spots.
The Wisconsin C boat took the cake with a time of 18:53.46, followed by the Wisconsin B boat in fourth (19:33.82), the Wisconsin A boat in fifth (19:36.29) and the Wisconsin E boat in sixth (19:40.84).
The Wisconsin G boat placed eighth with a time of 19:55.88, while the Wisconsin F boat was ninth (20:04.20) and the Wisconsin D boat was 12th (20:27.82).
Rounding out the top three positions in the open four were the Lincoln Park Boat Club in second place (19:00.61) and University of Chicago Crew in third (19:15.49).
“It was just a really solid, strong, positive experience for the Badgers,” Bryans said. “Hopefully today’s results will inspire the upperclassmen to live up to the performance that their lowerclassmen teammates just accomplished.”
Wisconsin will row next at the Head of the Rock in Rockford, Ill., on Oct. 12.
