Underclassmen lead the way in final day of Marquette Invitational

Robinson and Hahn record top-25 finishes

RIVER HILLS, Wis. -- Guided by the consistent play of the underclassmen, the Wisconsin men's golf team finished in seventh place at the Marquette Invitational held at the Milwaukee Country Club.

Finishing at 2-over, freshman Nick Robinson (69-72-71=212) tied for 16th place to pick up his first ever top-20 finish and lead the Badgers. Sophomore Jordan Hahn (73-69-73=215) finished three strokes behind to tie for 25th.

"It was fun seeing Nick and Jordan being in the mix for an individual title going into the day," UW head coach Michael Burcin said. "I think this is the fourth week in a row we've had an individual be in the mix to win so that's certainly a big step for our program."

Senior Ben Skogen (75-71-73=219) ended the tournament at 9-over to tie for 32nd place. After a rough start in the opening round, Eddie Wajda (82-73-74=229) and Johnny Decker (80-76-73=229) each rebounded, with Decker shooting his best round of the tournament on the final day, as both tied for 53rd place at 19-over.

Freshman Pete Kuhl (78-70-68=216), who competed as an individual, shot a 2-under 68 in the final round to record a new career low and surge 11 spots up the leaderboard to claim 28th place.

"Pete Kuhl played well and is another freshman who had another really solid fall and start to his career so it's nice to see him play well," Burcin said.

Individual competitor Brett Robinson (76-72-71=219) also fired off his lowest round of the tournament to finish at 9-over and tie for 32nd place, his best finish of the season. The final individual competitor, senior Tommy Schofield (80-72-79=231), ended at 19-over to join Wajda and Decker in a tie for 53rd place.

In team play, Northwestern finished at 4-under to take home the tournament title while Mississippi (+1), UCLA (+5), SMU (+6) and Liberty (+9) rounded out the top-five. Marquette (+22) finished ten strokes ahead of the Badgers (+32, 297-285-290=872) and Seton Hall was five strokes back to claim eighth place. Northern Illinois (+42) and Valparaiso (+75) earned ninth and 10th place, respectively.

Up next, select Badgers will compete at the Pine Tree Intercollegiate as individuals on Oct. 24-25 at the Pine Tree Golf Course in Kennesaw, Georgia. UW will then head out west to play as a team at the Gifford Intercollegiate from Nov. 7-9 in Napa, California, at the Silverado Golf Course.

"Looking back, we had a bad first round this weekend but the second and third were definitely better so it will be nice to have a few weeks to get some work done before we head out to Napa," Burcin said.
