NAPA, Calif. -- The Wisconsin men's golf team wrapped up the fall season on a high note by taking down South Florida, 5-1, in the final round of the Gifford Collegiate at the Silverado Resort and Spa North Course.
Â
"This was a total team effort against a perennial national power," head coach
Michael Burcin said. "South Florida is a great squad and this was an awesome win. We played great yesterday on the first nine against Colorado and couldn't close the deal and today the kids made up for it."
Â
The Badgers collected five total wins. Freshman
Nick Robinson, sophomore
Jordan Hahn and junior Eddie Wajda each beat their opponents 1-up.
Pete Kuhl defeated Cristian DiMarco, 2-and-1, and
Brett Robinson took down Priyanshu Singh, 3-and-2, to give UW two more points.
Â
"I couldn't have asked for a better way to wrap up the fall today from
Pete Kuhl, who got us started with a win, to Eddie and Coach Woodruff who worked hard for a win at the back of the lineup," Burcin said.
Â
The Badgers' sole loss of the day came at the hands of Rigel Fernandes, who defeated senior
Ben Skogen 3-and-2.
Â
Southern California, who topped the Badgers in the quarterfinals, took home the tournament title after beating Stanford, 4-2. Northwestern earned third place by taking down Washington, 3-2, and Colorado took fifth by beating UCLA, 4-2, after defeating UW in the semifinals.
Â
With the fall now completed, the Badgers look ahead to the spring slate. Wisconsin will kick off the spring in Kiawah Island, South Carolina, for the Charleston Southern Dual on Feb. 11.
Â
"These freshmen and sophomores that played this week are afraid of no one and with the leadership of Skogen and Wajda, we have a nice mix," Burcin said. "I wish the spring season began next week."
