UW challenged on Day 1 of the Pac-12 Invite

Wisconsin shakes early jitters to comeback strong

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Taking on two highly-ranked teams in No. 1 California and No. 3 Stanford head-to-head in one day was no small feat, but the No. 13 Wisconsin women's rowing team accepted the challenge on Saturday at the Pac-12 Invitational and threw down their best on the Redwood Shores racecourse.

Wisconsin's varsity eight (1V8), second varsity eight (2V8), and varsity four (1V4) all competed in Saturday's races beginning with Stanford in the morning. The Cardinals took all three races.

With one race under its belt, UW came back Saturday afternoon after making changes in all three boats and executed its race against Cal a lot better.

Pac-12 Invite action will resume tomorrow morning as UW takes on No. 11 USC beginning with the 1V8 at 11 a.m., 2V8 at 11:10 a.m., and the 1V4 following at 11:20 a.m. All times are in central time (CT).

On overall racing

"It is really nice being out here and it was a beautiful day. I think we are pretty happy with the overall results of the day, but we were not really pleased with the performances from the boats from this morning. I think they came out a little bit too nervous and shaky. We chatted about it and came up with a different plan for the afternoon.

"All boats executed really well and stepped up in the afternoon races. They learned a lot, which is exactly what needs to happen for us to be successful this year. So we are happy with how we finished off the day and we are looking forward to one last race tomorrow morning."

On home conditions
"We got pictures from our teammates that Lake Wingra and Marshall Park (on Lake Mendota) is open. So we are looking forward to getting home and getting after it as rowers and not just as wanting to be rowers."
