Five things to know before the season opener

The Badgers begin their 2021 campaign Thursday

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin men's soccer begins its 2021 regular season Thursday when they host SIUE and Sunday against Green Bay. Here are five things to know before the opening weekend.

Big Ten Players to Watch List – Senior Moritz Kappelsberger, senior Andrew Akindele, and sophomore Tim Bielic earned preseason conference recognition Monday.

History with SIUE and Green Bay – UW is 2-4-2 against the Cougars. Wisconsin and SIUE met last in 2019 at McClimon Soccer Complex. The Badgers and Cougars drew 2-2 and junior Iñaki Irribarren added an assist. The series between Wisconsin and Green Bay is tied at 19-19-1. The Badgers came out with a 3-0 win against the Phoenix in the 2016 season when the two programs faced off in Green Bay.

Veteran Roster – All five goal scorers and six Badgers with assists from the 2021 spring roster are back for the fall.

Seven Newcomers – Joining UW this fall are: defender Jonathan Bowen, fullback Dan Iscra, midfielder Ryan Keefe, midfielder Kyle McCurley, forward Will Navarre, keeper Adir Raphael and midfielder Aron Saevarsson.

Fans are Back – Fans will be back at McClimon Soccer Complex for a regular-season game for the first time since Oct. 30, 2019. Admission is free and kickoff is set for 5 p.m. Thursday and 7 p.m. Sunday.
