Badgers ship off to Seattle for prestigious regatta

SEATTLE -- The No. 15 Wisconsin men's rowing team will travels this weekend to compete in the 38th annual Windermere Cup on Saturday, May 4 on Montlake Cut.

1. OPPONENTS: The Windermere Cup is one of the most prestigious races in the nation, and the Wisconsin men's and women's teams will be competing in it for the first time this year. The Seattle event will feature a total of 23 races between both the men and women of the Wisconsin Badgers, the Washington Huskies and the Italian National Team, among others. Wisconsin and Washington have competed annually for the W Cup head-to-head or at the Intercollegate Rowing Association National Championships regatta since 1993, while Washington defeated Italy for gold in the 1936 Olympics in what became "The Boys in the Boat" story.

Wisconsin comes into this week ranked No. 15 in the IRCA/IRA heaveyweight eight poll yet again, with 135 total points. Washington is ranked No. 2 in the country with a total of 288 points, including five first-place votes.

2. OUTLOOK: The Badgers will get to compete against an old rival and future B1G counterpart Washington. Wisconsin head coach said before the season that "we're excited as a team to be invited by the University of Washington to compete at the Windemere Cup. It's a great opportunity to rekindle a previous race we used to have with the newest member of the Big Ten in an awesome environment" said Hoopman. "Having raced in it before, I can say it is one of the most electric events in all of rowing. The race course is lined with sailboats, yachts, schooners and all other kinds of watercraft, kind of like the curb at your local parade. It gives the spectators an up-close-and-personal view of the racing and offers the competitors an unbelievably loud crowd. It'll be a tough weekend with some stellar competition, but our guys are up to the task."

Washington head coach Michael Callahan had this to say about the event... "Washington and Wisconsin have a long history of competing against one another," said Callahan. "In fact, this year's race will give us the opportunity for the Huskies and Badgers to once again compete for the 'W' trophy, as we have for many years."

3. INFORMATION: Saturday's races begin at 10:15 a.m. Paid parking is available at the University of Washington. Fans are invited and encouraged to watch the races, free of charge, along the Montlake Cut. For more information, maps, and parking visit http://windermerecup.withwre.com/directions-parking/. Award ceremonies will take place following the conclusion of Windermere Cup races AT THE FINISH LINE (i.e., not at the Shellhouse) on the north side of the Cut, for the Windermere and Cascade Cups. The award ceremony for Masters, Collegiate, and Junior's races will take place on the same stage at 1:30 p.m. PT. Lastly, the results of the races will be posted HERE.

In addition to Saturday's racing, Wisconsin's varsity eight will take part in the "Twilight Sprints" that run for 600 meters starting from the regular Montlake Cut finish and ending at the ASUW Shellhouse.

4. HISTORY: The Windermere Cup got its start 37 years ago, in 1987, when Windermere Real Estate founder, John Jacobi, joined up with the University of Washington to create the annual rowing event. They wanted to bring the best team in the world to Seattle's Montlake Cut, which at the time was the Soviet Union. That occasion marked one of the few athletic competitions for the Soviets inside the U.S. in 25 years, since relations were strained during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. The Soviet Union brought both its men's and women's crews and won both races in convincing fashion. After that, the precedent was set for what has become one of the world's premier rowing events, and certainly a staple of Seattle's rowing community. This year's event marks the 53rd running of the Opening Day regatta, which has included the Windermere Cup for the last 37 years. The 2024 event will include a number of events during the week leading up to race day. The Seattle Yacht Club's Opening Day parade through the Montlake Cut will immediately follow the racing. Further details will be announced at a later date. For more information visit www.windermerecup.com.
