MADISON, Wis.— The Wisconsin women's rowing team hosted Iowa and Indiana for a two-day scrimmage on home turf, Lake Mendota.
 
To start things off, on Friday evening crews raced a pair of 4,000-meter head race pieces and finished off Saturday morning with short sprint pieces lined up together.  
 
With less than a month into their college careers, Wisconsin women's novice rowers made their competitive rowing debuts lining up against Iowa for the first time ever.

"It was the first time we have done races like that over at Marshall Park, so that was pretty fun and it came off really well. Racing wise, the coaches were really happy to see what we saw. We saw what we thought was going on in practice and we got to see under race conditions, so that was really helpful. We do have a lot of work to do. That's the good news because we know what we need to work on. I think the performances across the board were better than expected and we are pretty happy about it. A lot of thanks to Iowa and Indiana for coming all the way up and sharing the water with us, it was really fun."
 
Lightweight novice coach Karly Laney
"Overall [openweight novice coach] Monica Whitehouse and I were really pleased with the freshmen and novices. We have been on the water two-and-a-half times up until this point. It was awesome to have four novice eights rowing all eight and getting after it. Today, we told them to be racers and find out what racing is and we can smooth everything else out. They loved being with other teams."
 
Up next:
Wisconsin heads to Lansing, Michigan for a scrimmage against Michigan and Michigan State the weekend of October 27.
