Wisconsin places 156 on Academic All-Big Ten team

Conference recognizes student-athletes with at least a 3.0 GPA

MADISON, Wis. — One hundred and fifty-six student-athletes from the University of Wisconsin were named to the spring and at-large Academic All-Big Ten teams, the Big Ten Conference office announced on Wednesday.

Leading the way for the 11 spring sports was the men's track and field team, which had 27 honorees, while the women's track and field squad had 26 Badgers that earned Academic All-Big Ten honors. Women's rowing had 25 honorees and men's rowing had 22 recipients.

Several All-Big Ten honorees also earned academic recognition including men's tennis player Daniel Soyfer, women's golfer Gabby Curtis, women's rowers Lexi Siverling and Megan Whitehouse, softball players Kelsey Jenkins and Brooke Wyderski, men's track and field's Sawyer Smith and women's track and field's Taylor Amann, Georgia Ellenwood and Alicia Monson.

Also included on the list was WCHA Forward of the Year Abby Roque from women's hockey and All-WCHA honorees Mikaela Gardner, Claudia Kepler and Sophia Shaver.

Women's rower Elisabet Pietz and women's track and field runner Emma Langer were recognized for their perfect 4.0 GPAs.

Both of Wisconsin's Big Ten postgraduate scholarship recipients earned academic honors as track and field seniors Tim Guthrie and Lianna Mack were both recognized for their work in the classroom. Both plan to continue their education in graduate school and were awarded a $7,500 scholarship, based on their previous academic achievements.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

UW's term and cumulative GPAs for 2017-2018 were the highest recorded in at least the past 15 years and the 2016-2017 APR had 15 teams with a perfect 1,000 single-year APR. Four teams also received public recognition awards for their APR — football, men's soccer, men's tennis, and women's golf.
